Scott Shatford didn't bargain for criminal charges. The official complaint arrived at his front door in May, more than a year after Santa Monica, California, voted to ban the short-term home rentals flooding its small beachside community. Shatford knew the rules but had chosen to ignore them, continuing to list two properties for short stays on Airbnb.

I wonder if a rethink is in order along the lines of all airbnb listings?

  • need to be registered with the local tourist authority
  • letting properties whole (unfurnished or furnished) or shared should be registered with the local authority
  • along the verified route as in the Avaro model
